Motrin and Advil (ibuprofen) for babies: the rules
Motrin / Advil / ibuprofen for babies: not under 6 months, by weight, how often, infant drops vs children's liquid
Reviewed against its source, listed below
At a glance
- Not for babies under 6 months unless their doctor says so.
- The amount goes by the child's weight (by age only if the weight isn't known). The AAP publishes a weight table on its ibuprofen page, and says to check with the child's doctor that the amount is right.
- It can be given every 6 to 8 hours if needed.
- Infant drops and children's liquid are different strengths: use the syringe or cup that comes with that exact product, and measure in mL, never with a kitchen spoon.
- Avoid combination products (more than one ingredient) under age 6.

Log each dose as a medicine record: every caregiver sees when the last dose was given, and the 6 to 8 hours are easy to count.
